What will I study?

This is a sports science study programme that brings together theory and practical skills and knowledge. You will study multiple units: Core – compulsory units: anatomy for sport and exercise, sport and exercise physiology, sport and exercise psychology, research methods for sport and exercise, research project for sport and exercise, fitness testing for sport and exercise. Specialist units: sports biomechanics in action, exercise, health and lifestyle, fitness training and programming, sports nutrition, current issues in sport, instructing physical activity and exercise, sports injuries, sports coaching, practical individual sports, practical team sports. This qualification will form part of a study programme, which includes exclusive access to the sports academy and enrichment programme, maths and English, tutorial support, employability and study skills.

 

Why study Sport and Exercise Science?

You will develop a wide range of skills and abilities that will enable you to either progress onto Higher Education or into employment in sports related industries, especially into those requiring a scientific background.

You will be studying a broad range of sport and health related topics whilst developing a strong scientific and academic approach to these topics. You will discover how to apply theoretical and practical techniques to analyse and improve the sporting performance of yourself and others, as well as improving general health and fitness. You will learn the appropriate use of both laboratory and eld-based testing and training equipment using our highly equipped science laboratory. You will also learn how to use digital analysis systems to compare yourself and others with elite performers in order to fine tune sports skills and techniques.

With a strong academic focus, this course will suit you if you have an interest in using scientific approaches to developing groups and individuals across a wide range of populations, from those suffering with severe lifestyle diseases right through to those at the top of the sports performance pyramid.

 

Assessment

This qualification is assessed by exams and coursework, which includes projects, assignments, presentations and practical activities. Your tutors set the coursework for all internally assessed units.

Where will this course lead me?

Progress to:

  • Personal Training, YMCA, Level 3 qualification
  • Sport Studies, Foundation Degree at Weston College (in partnership with UWE Hartpury)
  • The Sport and Exercise Science study programme provides opportunity to study a range of undergraduate study programmes in some of the country’s leading sports universities. These include sport and exercise science, sports coaching, sports therapy and sport and physical education.

Job/career opportunities:

A wide range of career paths in the sport and leisure industry, which is one of the fastest-growing sectors of the UK economy. These career paths may include fitness instructing and training, sports leadership and coaching. Combined with a university degree, many learners with sports science qualifications move into a career in teaching.
